The History of Conversation Hearts
February 2, 2011 No CommentsValentine’s Day is approaching fast, and what better way to celebrate than to give those cute conversation hearts to friends, family, and loved ones. However, not many people know about the history behind conversation hearts!
Oliver Chase, in 1847, invented the Peppermint Lozenge cutter and teamed up with Silas Evan, his brother, to create the Chase Candy Company. Only 13 years later, his other brother named Daniel Chase, invented a device that allowed them to print text onto the peppermint lozenges. In 1900, the first motto candy was created, but not in the shape of a heart. Ironically, it was named Sweet Hearts. The Chase Candy Company combined with 3 other candy company to become the New England Confectionary Company, and were the first to have imprinted candies in several shapes including horseshoes and watches. After time, the shape became a heart, and messages were limited to two lines to fit perfectly on the heart shaped candy!
Sweet City Candy has plenty of conversation hearts ready for Valentine’s Day!
